A wild boar piglet that was seriously injured in a suspected hit and run that killed four other piglets was put down yesterday.

It was one of five piglets that were found on Route Twisk in Tai Mo Shan on Sunday night.

When police arrived, four of the piglets were declared dead at the scene, while one was found to be still breathing but was seriously injured.

It was taken to Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden for treatment, but vets had to put it down after finding the piglet had a spinal break and a paralysed rear legMing Pao reported.

All five piglets were believed to have come from the same family.

The incident has prompted calls for the government to revise section 56 of Road Traffic Ordinance, which states that a driver must stop their vehicle when they have been involved in an accident that has harmed an animal.

Currently the law does not include wild boars.

Ming Pao reported that Democratic Party lawmaker Roy Kwong said the police should follow up, and that the ordinance should be updated to include other animals such as cats and dogs.

He added that the government should also follow the example of other countries and set up signs on roads warning drivers to drive cars slowly in areas where there are animals around.

A spokesperson from the Food and Health Bureau told the newspaper that a review of section 56 of the Road Traffic Ordinance will be completed by the end of this year and that they will consider revising the current ordinance.
