A car accident in Tai Mo Shan* last night killed four wild boar piglets and left one seriously injured.

The five little piggies, sadly, appeared to be at the wrong place at the wrong time.

According to hk01, the accident took place on Route Twisk — a dual lane road that links Tsuen Wan to Pat Heung — before 11:00pm.

When officers and staff from the Animal Protection Association arrived on the scene, one piglet that was about 1.5 feet long was found lying in the middle of the road and the other four were lying on the side of the road.

The vehicle that hit the piglets was nowhere to be found, but car parts were found on the road.

Four piglets were confirmed dead at the scene and carried to one side of the road, while the sole surviving piglet was sent to Kadoorie Farm where it is being treated by vets.

After news of the accident appeared online, netizens arrived at the scene to post photographs and videos from the scene of the accident. Some readers may find these images upsetting.

Under section 56 Road Traffic Ordinance, a driver must stop their vehicle when they have been involved in an accident that has harmed an animal.

The driver must then report this to the police as soon as possible, and failure to do so can land the driver a HK$10,000 (about US$1,280) fine and 12 months in jail.

However, hk01 reported that police will not be investigating the incident as this only applies to horses, cattle, asses, mules, sheep, pigs, and goats. It does not include wild boars, or even cats and dogs.

This comes just a few days after a police found the head of a wild boar next to a bag of innards behind a housing estate in Tai Wai.

According to HKFP, the Wild Boar Concern Group called on police to do more to find the people responsible for that boar’s death, adding that an animal trap and pig skin remains were found in the woods near the area where the wild boar was found.
