Police are investigating a suspected case of animal cruelty after finding the head of a wild boar next to a plastic bag of what is believed to be its innards.

The grim discovery was made by a man walking near Lung Hang Estate in Tai Wai at 6pm yesterday evening. He then alerted police and the Wild Boar Concern GroupMing Pao reported.

The group posted photos of the find online, which some readers may find upsetting.

The newspaper reported that police found a rope, but they could not find a knife or any weapon that could have been used to decapitate the boar.

Police took away the head and the innards for testing, but the body of the boar is still missing.

Officers have not ruled out the possibility someone may have eaten the boar.

Residents from Lung Hang Estate told hk01 that their area is a wild boar hotspot but no one in the area had ever been injured by one of the animals.

Anyone found guilty of mistreating an animal under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Ordinance can get a maximum fine of HK$200,000 (US$26,500) and three years in jail.
