A police van burst into flames near Kwun Tong Friday morning, sending thick smoke billowing into the skies seconds before an officer narrowly escaped.

The vehicle abandoned near the entrance of the Eastern Harbor Tunnel as flames licked the van. Firefighters took around 15 minutes to put out the blaze, bringing traffic in the area to a halt, South China Morning Post reported.

According to a police source cited by the Post, the van had been sent to a vehicle repair plant two days earlier, and an officer was driving the vehicle back to the police headquarters in Wan Chai when it erupted into flames.

Photos taken by local reporters showed the insides of the severely disfigured by the blaze, the seat’s upholstery appearing to have melted entirely leaving behind wiring and metal frames.

The fire was deemed not suspicious in an initial investigation. Only one person, the driver, was in the van, and no casualties were reported.
