An abandoned new born baby, discovered next to a rubbish bin in Wan Chai this morning, has died in hospital.

The girl, whose umbilical cord was still attached, was in a coma when she was found by passersby near the intersection of Hennessy and Tonnochy roads at about 7:30am, reported Ming Pao news.

Retrieved by paramedics, she was declared dead at the hospital.

The news outlet ran photos showing a white polystyrene box with a lid next to one of the Hong Kong’s ubiquitous orange rubbish bins.

Police investigating the case blocked off the scene and brought in police dogs to search for evidence.

The tragic case, unfortunately, is not the first of its kind in Hong Kong.

Police in December 2016 launched a search for the parents of an infant girl who was abandoned at a barbecue area in Sai Kung.

The girl was found with a note inside a red packet stating she was 5 months old and suffered from cerebral palsy.

In 2015, a Hong Kong babysitter began her own search to find the parents of a baby that was left in her care four years prior.

According to the Associated Press, the babysitter was paid to look after the infant boy for a few months by a well-dressed woman who approached her in the street and, four years later, had still not returned.
