Anti-drug police had cause to celebrate over the weekend after busting a  drug-trafficking syndicate in the New Territories and seizing 36 kilograms of drugs worth some HK$42 million (US$5.3 million) in street value, according to reports.

The raid by the Narcotics Bureau on Friday evening about 9:30pm uncovered a manufacturing plant at a residential flat in Yuen Long, according to HK01.

Officers arrested three locals. The first two — a 25-year-old woman surnamed Ng, and a 40-year-old man surnamed Cheng — were found outside the address, with the latter in possession of a bag containing several kilograms of cocaine.

Police then raided the apartment, where they found another 40-year-old man surnamed Shum along with a massive haul of drugs and drug-making equipment.

It total, some 36 kilograms of narcotics were discovered, including 27 kilograms of cocaine, as well as crack cocaine, heroin and ketamine.

According to HK01, the equipment included hardware for mixing drugs, pressing pills and packaging.

They suspect the property was a distribution center, where cocaine was cut with other chemicals, which had been in operation for about three months.

With officers now investigating whether the trio have triad links, acting superintendent Lo Ka-chun and chief inspector Tam Tsz-wai of the Narcotics Bureau, during a media briefing, said the case serves as a reminder to landlords to be on the lookout for suspicious behaviour by tenants, particular those who took out short-term leases.

The suspects are expected to appear at Tuen Mun Magistrates Court today.
