People queue for over 20 hours for Food Expo abalone giveaway

Following in the footsteps of traditions like Cheung Chau Bun Festival, one Food Expo exhibitor is letting participants snatch as many… abalones as they can in one single minute from a mountain made up of the seafood delicacies.

Ten people queued overnight outside the Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai for a chance to participate in this wacky stunt put on by On Kee, a local dried seafood company, yesterday – with some people queuing for 21 hours.

A company spokesperson gave out 10 entrance tickets to the first 10 people in line at 7am, reports Oriental Daily. The tickets cost only HKD1.

The rules, however, are rather lame: the ten participants would be divided into two groups, with each team sending one rep to grab as many abalones as they can. Each teammate will then receive the number of abalones that the rep grabs.

The spokesperson said they had put on a similar event with fish maw last year, but the frenzy turned sour when participants went a little overboard and failed to follow the rules.

This year, each participant is only allowed to snatch up 100 of the seafood delicacies.

One woman and her daughter, both surnamed Lam, had been queuing since 10am the day before – and they were only second and third in line.

In addition to grabbing armfuls of abalone, the Lams said they intended to buy dried food since prices inside the Expo are cheaper.

We’re just hoping abalone-snatching becomes Hong Kong’s newest euphemism for some lecherous act.
