Not a cop: Man arrested for posing as a policeman before robbing victims

How to tell if someone’s not a genuine police officer?

Well, for starters, they should NOT rob you of jewels and a mobile phone.

That’s what gave the game away for a 41-year-old Pakistani man arrested last night on suspicion of impersonating a cop and robbery.

The suspect, according to Apple Daily, claimed he was a cop upon approaching a 34-year-old Bangladeshi national in Yau Ma Tei’s Shanghai Street in the early hours of Friday morning.

The first not-so-subtle hint that he was, in fact, not an officer of the law was his taking of the man’s mobile phone and some jewels worth some HK$1000.

Feeling confused and rightly suspicious after the encounter, the victim rang the real police who tracked down the suspect who, it turned out, had allegedly done his whole ‘I’m a cop give me your stuff’ routine before.

According to Apple Daily, he tried the bit on Wednesday with another Bangladeshi man, who was robbed of a HK$4000 mobile phone and about HK$400 in cash.

The man’s apartment in Fa Yuen Street was searched, though no property was recovered. The fake cop, it seems, will now face real justice.
