A murder trial has rejected the manslaughter plea of a man who stabbed his ex-girlfriend on a bus three years ago.

Ng Yan-kin, 26, faces one count of murder, a conviction for which could result in a mandatory life sentence. In High Court on Tuesday, Ng denied the murder charge, but pleaded guilty to the lighter offence of manslaughter.

He said that he had mental health issues and does not remember the attack.

The incident occurred during during a bus ride through Chai Wan in September 2017 when Ng knifed her ex-girlfriend, surnamed Lee, about 30 times with a kitchen knife after a fight. Stab wounds were found on her arms, neck, chest and back.

Ng reportedly stabbed himself, then broke a window and jumped out from the top deck of the bus.

Photos show Ng lying in a pool of blood on the pavement. Lee, who was 20, was certified dead at the hospital.

According to the prosecution, Ng and Lee met on an online app in 2016 and began a relationship. Both were students at the Polytechnic University, where Ng studied civil engineering and Lee became a nursing student there after earning her Associate Degree.

Lee saw Ng as an overbearing boyfriend who forbid her from joining activities at the university and demanded to know her whereabouts constantly. Later, she broke up with Ng, after which he began developing suicidal tendencies.

After the break-up, Ng threatened to release sex tapes that the pair had taken together.

The prosecution said Ng bought the knife for around HK$60 (US$7.80) at Japan Home Daily.

The case will continue in court Wednesday.
