It’s a video that’s difficult to watch even when the rider, later found to have alcohol in his system, survived.

It shows the moment a 48-year-old on a scooter — an off-duty fireman surnamed Chan — tried to switch lanes on the Fanling Highway at 8:52am on Saturday morning.

His misjudged move from slow moving traffic to fast saw him collide with the back of a truck, fall from his scooter and get dragged along for several meters.

Video here (again, cautionary note before watching, some readers may find it distressing).

According to Apple Daily, liquor appears to have played a role in the crash — Chan failed a breathalyser test, which showed the alcohol in his system exceeded the legal limit.

Chan, a senior firefighter at the Castle Peak Bay fire station in Tuen Mun, was taken to the North District Hospital after sustaining injuries to his arms, legs, and neck.

He was later arrested and detained by police.

The Fire Services Department confirmed that an off-duty firefighter had collided with a truck on Fanling Highway near Pak Shek Au, and that he was receiving hospital treatment and cooperating with the investigation.
