Mainland follies: Man turns down marriage proposal, cash because fear of heights

In a bizarre challenged-based marriage proposal that, if legit, backfired spectacularly, a woman in China popped the question to her acrophobic boyfriend but demanded he cross a glass-bottomed walkway suspended 30 meters in the air to seal the deal.

Turns out his fear of heights was greater than his love for (or fear of) his woman. (Watch the whole thing on Weibo)

Now, it smells a bit like a publicity stunt. First of all, the woman also brought along a new car and her RMB¥1 million (HK$1.1 million) cash dowry in a suitcase to sweeten the pot and entice her suitor across.

Second of all, who does that?

A spokesman of the company which manages the scenic walkway in China’s Hunan province, however, claimed the whole set up was at the woman’s request.

They told the The Paper.cn the site was a hotspot for wedding proposals and photos.

This one, though, seemingly did not go to plan, unless the objective was humiliation, then full marks.

At the beginning of the footage, the woman, dress in a bridal gown, beckons her man to join her.

“We have been dating for three years. I’m happy that I’ve met you in my life but I can’t marry you because of your timid personality,” she says.

“Everything is ready, all you have to do is to walk past the corridor and I will marry you.”

His response seems pretty sincerely felt.

“NO! I can’t, I really can’t,” he yells, resisting attempts by friends to make him man up and take the metaphorical plunge from the literal (safely fenced) ledge.

Go ahead! Your girlfriend, the car and the cash are waiting!”

And waiting they remain, as the man turns away and leaves.
