In April, amid a heated debate at the Legislative Council, Democratic Party lawmaker Ted Hui swiped a female bureaucrat’s phone and ran into the men’s toilets to search it, saying he wanted to find out about efforts to surveil lawmakers.

Today it’s emerged Hui’s been formally charged with three offenses over the incident.

According to the lawmaker’s Facebook page, police have taken action, ringing charges of common assault, accessing a computer with criminal or dishonest intent, and obstructing a public officer from performing official duties.

The woman whose phone was snatched was a worker from the from the Security Bureau.

She was working to coordinate support for a controversial bill drafted by the Security Bureau to allow mainland officers to operate within a special port area at the high-speed rail link terminus in West Kowloon.

The bill was later passed.

Known for his exaggerated antics, Hui, at the time, was criticized by his own party for the incident.

He was arrested on suspicion of common assault and access to a computer with dishonest intent a week latter.

In revealing police had filed the formal charges today, Hui maintained it was unacceptable for the government to send officers to monitor lawmakers at Legco.

He said he had filed a case with Administrative Appeals Board (AAB) accusing the government of acting illegally in this respect.

Hui is set to appear in court next Tuesday.
