Landlord convicted of raping 10-year-old tenant jailed for 10 years

A 48-year-old man was sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment today for raping a 10-year-old girl on five occasions in 2014.

The man, who was not identified for legal reasons, rented out a subdivided apartment in Fanling to the now-12-year-old girl and her mother, whom he was allegedly having an affair with, Oriental Daily reports.

He was charged with five counts of rape and convicted on four at the High Court last month.

His sentencing was adjourned until today to allow the judge to assess his likelihood of recidivism based on his psychological reports.

The assaults began in March 2014, and took place when the child was home alone.

“He knocked at the door and asked if my mother was home,” she recounted. The girl let the landlord into the apartment, believing that he was collecting rent, SCMP reports.

In a video testimony shown in court, the child spoke of how he then locked the door and raped her.

She detailed how the 48-year-old had threatened to evict her unless she submitted to him, and how he assaulted her four more times up until June 2, 2014. Two days later, the girl and her mother emigrated to the USA to be with her father.
