Indonesian maid dies ‘falling from window in Hong Kong flat whilst cleaning’

Police suspect that an Indonesian maid, who was found dead in Kowloon City yesterday, fell from an apartment window whilst cleaning.

A security guard found the 21-year-old domestic helper, known as Titik, unconscious on the ground, after hearing a loud thud from within Elite House on Argyle Street.

Titik had only been in Hong Kong for two months prior to her death.

The guard immediately contacted police, who pronounced the woman dead on arrival at the scene, Ming Pao Daily reports (as translated by EJI). They also found blood stains and broken pieces of a flower pot near her body.

As no suicide note was found on the helper’s person or in the flat, police concluded that the woman probably fell from the window accidentally while cleaning.

Over the past two years, a total of 14 domestic helpers have fallen from windows, according to Cheung Kit-man, chairman of Hong Kong Employment Agencies Association.

Under current law, an employer must purchase insurance for their foreign domestic workers. Therefore, the maid’s family members are eligible for compensation and will not have to pay for the body to be sent back home in the event of a tragic accident.
