A 40-year-old Bangladeshi man died today after he fell off a cliff during the Amber Rainstorm this morning. His acquaintances, who called the police, were arrested after they were revealed to have entered Hong Kong illegally with him.

At about 8:30am, emergency services received a call for help from a group of South Asian men on Lantau Island, who said they were hikers. One of the men in the group had apparently slipped and fallen whilst walking.

At around 9:16am, firefighters and marine police arrived on the scene — having had trouble locating the group due to the weather and a lack of details about their location — to search for the missing man.

Marine police found the 40-year-old unconscious in the waters near the shore at about 11am and took him to North Lantau Hospital, where he was certified dead. According to Oriental Daily, the 10 other men who were walking with the deceased were revealed to have entered Hong Kong illegally by boat and were arrested.

A police source told SCMP that the group had likely been smuggled into Hong Kong from mainland China by human traffickers (also known as snakeheads), who are known for bringing immigrants into the city in bad weather.
