‘Ignorance is no excuse’: Tsuen Wan bird shop manager fined for selling endangered species

A bird shop manager caught selling the endangered common hill myna without a license was fined HKD9,000 at Tsuen Wan Magistrates’ Courts yesterday.

Surnamed Kwong, the woman was busted by undercover Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department staff posing as customers at the shop, My Parrot Company, in January. She was offering the birds for HKD5,000 each, reports Headline Daily.

Kwong was charged for breaching a term under the Protection of Endangered Species of Animals and Plants Ordinance and ruled guilty.

In court, Kwong reportedly said she didn’t know selling the common hill myna without a license was illegal, to which the magistrate responded that “ignorance of the law is not a reasonable excuse”.

Wise words to be remembered, indeed.
