Fight breaks out as protesters hurl insults at mainland tourists

Angry Hongkongers took to the streets yesterday at Canton Road — popular with mainland tourists for its luxury good stores — to hurl insults at mainland Chinese tourists with signs and slogans, calling them “locusts” and yelling at them to “go back to China.”

The police had to intervene at the start of the march, when scuffles broke out between protesters and people opposed to the demonstration. Mainland tourists shopping on Canton Road grumbled at the protestors, calling them disrespectful. One Shenzhen visitor even wondered why they are so unwelcome as “we help the economy of Hong Kong.”

Protest organiser Ronald Lam said that he was pleased by the response, and said that the government should take Hong Kong people’s voice seriously and stop allowing Chinese tourists into Hong Kong. What do you think — mainland tourists a nuisance or an economy booster?
