East Rail MTR train rolls backwards while passengers are getting off

An MTR train unexpectedly started to roll backwards on its tracks as passengers were getting off at Tai Wai Station yesterday.

Passengers were understandably scared, with many thinking that the East Rail train was leaving before the doors had closed, reports the SCMP.

People were getting off the train after a public announcement told them to disembark and take the next service.

An MTR spokesperson said that the train’s brakes had malfunctioned, but that the train should not have rolled back as it switched from emergency to normal mode.

“We later discovered that the platform was sloping gently, which might have explained what happened,” said the spokesperson in the least comforting statement ever. (Oh geez, we had no idea we built our station on a slope and that it might interfere with our emergency systems!)

The train was sent for inspection and the MTR company apologised to passengers who may or may not have gently shat their pants.
