Disneyland fireworks display could be suspended ahead of expansion work

There are still a few days left to enter Hong Kong Disneyland’s lucky draw, but if you’re one of 50,000 who get a free ticket to the theme park next year, and the thing you’re looking forward to most is the fireworks show, we might have bad news for you.

Sources have told Apple Daily that the magic kingdom could halt the Disney in the Stars fireworks display so that expansion work at Sleeping Beauty’s castle can take place.

The expansion work is part of the theme park’s HK$10.9 billion (US$1.4 billion) multiyear project, which will see new themed areas and attractions being added to the theme park every year for the next six years.

According to the newspaper, theme park attendees could see the 10-minute firework show stop after January. It is not known how long the display could be halted for, but the Walt Disney Company said the work to expanded castle so that it pays tribute to all Disney princesses will be finished by 2019.

Sources also told the newspaper that the park started scaling back the fireworks show by launching fewer fireworks, and have been reducing the number of fireworks being shipped into the park as of six months ago.

This has not gone unnoticed by eagle-eyed Disney lovers on a Facebook group called HKDL_Secret who noticed the reduced number of fireworks months ago, one commenter even posted in August: “Does this mean the company will have to scrap the fireworks show altogether because they have no money?”

Apple Daily reporters sent to the park also noticed that some musical numbers from Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast were also cut from the show.

Reactions by park-goers asked by the paper about the reduced fireworks have been mixed.  Some said that Disney land would now “be no different to Ocean Park” while some children saw the bright side and said it means “more time to play on the other rides”.

If the fireworks show is suspended, this could be a disappointment for the nearly 1 million people who have now reportedly entered the More Disney Fun for Everyone in Hong Kong lucky draw. But for those of you who just want to go for the fireworks and nothing else, here’s a video of the whole show:
