After a power plant worker was killed in a freak industrial accident earlier this week, his colleagues and sympathetic Hong Kong citizens are rallying together to support the family of the deceased.

Employees at China Light & Power (CLP) are raising funds for the family of Cheung Chun-wah, a worker who was buried alive in coal ash whilst cleaning a large container at the Castle Peak Power Station on Tuesday morning.

Cheung, 58, was one of seven workers conducting the scheduled biennial cleaning. Five of the workers managed to escape, while the sixth, who was also trapped, was found in time by responding firefighters and sent to hospital. It took firefighters two hours to locate Cheung, by which time he had died.

Cheung is survived by his 48-year-old wife and 23-year-old son. Apple Daily reports that the 58-year-old was the sole breadwinner of the family, as his son had given up work to take care of his mother, who suffers from brain tumours.

Alongside the donation from his colleagues, CLP will be issuing an undisclosed sum of condolence money to Cheung’s family on top of his gratuity. Apple Daily’s charity branch has donated HKD20,000 to the family, and is also accepting contributions from citizens for the Cheungs. If you would like to donate to the family, you can do so by visiting this page (link in Chinese, case number C4281).
