Cold weather warning issued, gov’t cautions against boozing to stay warm

Hong Kong’s Observatory this morning issued a cold weather warning as temperatures in parts of the territory plunged into the single digits.

The weather authority listed today’s minimum temperature as 10 degrees Celsius with a maximum of 16.

Parts of the New Territories continued to hover around 7 to 8 degrees as of 10am. The high-ground station in Ngong Ping on Lantau Island registered 2.9 degrees at 7am.

The Observatory first issued a cold weather warning on Saturday afternoon as the cold front set in.

In an update dispatched at 6am this morning, it advised people to put on warm clothes, ensure adequate indoor ventilation and avoid prolonged exposure to wintery winds.

It also urged individuals to check up on elderly people or those with chronic medical conditions living alone.

The Centre for Health Protection also cautioned residents as the cold front approached on Friday, reminding them, among other things, that alcohol cannot actually keep you warm.

“Alcohol accelerates the loss of body heat through dilated blood vessels, resulting in chilling instead,” a spokesman for the CHP said.

An Observatory bulletin this morning explained that an “intense winter monsoon” was bringing cold weather to the region.

“At 10 a.m., Tropical Depression Kai-tak was centred about 540 kilometres east of Nansha Dao,” it reads.
“It is forecast to move west-southwest at about 18 kilometres per hour across the southern part of the South China Sea.”

Today’s weather will remain clear and dry. A fire warning is also in effect. The Observatory predicted cold mornings in the coming days with temperatures expected to rise slightly in the latter part of the week.
