Cold weather warning as temperatures set to dip to 8 degrees tomorrow

Bundle up and get out your heaters tonight, because the mercury is set to dip to single digits over the next few days.

Hongkongers woke up to a cloudy and overcast morning with rain patches as the Hong Kong Observatory issued a cold weather warning at 6am.

The Observatory also issued a strong monsoon signal at noon, and warned Hongkongers that it will be a cold one tonight, with temperatures dipping to about 10 degrees in urban areas, and a couple of degrees lower than that in the New Territories. The maximum temperature today is expected to be 19 degrees Celsius.

According to the nine-day weather forecast, the temperature tomorrow could be as low as eight degrees Celsius or as high as 10, and will continue to be cloudy with some rain.

Although it is still expected to be chilly throughout the week, the weather authority reported that there will be sunny periods on Wednesday, and that it will get warmer closer to the weekend.

A bulletin from the Observatory explained that this week’s cold weather is because of an intense winter monsoon behind a cold front that is crossing the coast of Guangdong.

The Centre for Health Protection also reminded the public to stay warm and, among other things, avoid alcoholic beverages, adding that “alcohol accelerates the loss of body heat through dilated blood vessels, resulting in chilling instead.”
