Burst saltwater pipe creates 5-storey high ‘fountain’ in Ma On Shan

Multiple homes in Ma On Shan were unable to flush their loos for hours after a saltwater main burst this morning, creating a massive “fountain” of sorts.

Photos and videos showing the five-storey high man-made fountain were shared on a private Facebook group for Ma On Shan residents this morning. Most of the commenters expressed their amazement at the rare “scenery”. Inspired by the incident, some even suggested building an actual fountain on the same spot.

According to members of the group, the entire district’s supply of toilet-flushing water was affected. The supply began to resume at around 6pm.

A spokesperson for the Water Supplies Department said they received reports of a rupture in a saltwater pipe with a diametre of 600 millimetres at around 7am. However, the cause of the rupture has yet to be confirmed, according to HK01.

Some Facebook users commented that water had been shooting out of the pipe for at least two hours before the water main was eventually switched off. Some others who claimed to live nearby even said they could “smell” the saltiness in the air.
