Blackout plunges Mong Kok Station into darkness for 40 minutes during rush hour

Rush hour commuters passing through Mong Kok Station were briefly plunged into darkness after a sudden blackout occurred earlier today.

At around 5:20pm, lights on a Tsuen Wan Line platform and a Kwun Tong Line platform went out. One escalator was reportedly also affected.

Backup floodlights were turned on until the regular lights came back on at 6pm. According to the official MTR update page, the blackout was due to a “partial lighting system failure”.

Last month, a short circuit at Central Station caused a power outage that lasted for almost six hours and spawned countless photos of the eerie-looking station, which were repeatedly likened to scenes from “28 Days Later”, a zombie apocalypse film.
