A Mong Kok convenience store was robbed by an ax-wielding thief yesterday, in the third robbery of its kind within eight days.

At around 3am, a masked man wearing all black entered a 7-Eleven shop at 14 Boundary Street, Mong Kok and demanded money from the store’s clerks, two women surnamed Tam and Wu, Oriental Daily reports.

After the man threatened Tam and Wu with an ax, they gave him a stack of banknotes from the cash register, totalling HKD5,800. The robber ran away. No arrests have been made so far.

Judging by security footage, police are looking for a man in his 30s, standing at 170 centimeters tall, who was seen in a black top and trousers, black hat, and black mask. Police said the suspect’s description and M.O. matched two other ax robberies committed recently in Kowloon in Tuen Mun.

At around 2am last Tuesday (April 18), a man carrying an ax stole HKD8,000 from a 7-Eleven shop at Shan King Commercial Centre in Tuen Mun. On Sunday, also at about 2am, an ax-wielding man robbed a 7-Eleven in Cheung Sha Wan of HKD5,800.

Based on the similarities between the cases, police have not ruled out the possibility that all three robberies were committed by the same person. (Alternatively, as Kung Fu Hustle fans, we have to wonder if it’s an initiation ritual for some kind of supervillain ax gang.)
