A man was slapped with a HK$4,000 (US$515) fine for accidentally crashing a drone at the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) barracks in Central in 2018.
The 51-year-old security guard, surnamed Tai, was flying his friend’s drone over the AIA Carnival at the Central Harborfront in December 2018 when he lost connection to it.
The drone ended up crashing at the nearby PLA barracks, where officers spotted the device and reported the incident to police. Nobody was injured, according to The Standard.
Tai turned himself into police after authorities contacted his friend, who police identified by reviewing the memory card in the drone.

In court, Tai said he was thrown off by the drone’s obstacle avoidance function and height restrictions.
Tai pled guilty to one charge of recklessly or negligently causing or permitting an aircraft to endanger other person or property. He said he will not be flying anymore but hoped to retrieve his drone and have it checked for abnormalities. The court, however, denied his request.
