A 41-year-old housewife was yesterday sentenced to two years in jail for attacking her husband’s mistress with a kitchen knife.
Ming Yongfang pleaded guilty to one count of wounding with intent earlier this year, and was handed the two-year sentence at the District Court yesterday.
Ming was arrested last year after confronting her husband’s mistress, surnamed Wong, in the lobby of her apartment block, and brandished a kitchen knife, stabbing Wong twice in the abdomen. Wong was injured in the liver and was discharged from hospital seven days later after receiving surgery.
According to Ming Pao, Judge Katherine Lo Kit-yee — citing letters written by Ming’s daughter and husband — described the defendant as a caring, traditional, and family-oriented woman.
Lo sympathised with the defendant, who the court heard was suffering from insomnia and depression, which came about as a result of her husband’s affair, and accepted that the mistress repeatedly provoked Ming in the run-up to the attack.
However, Lo said that Ming still committed a serious crime, and that she needed to hand down a deterrent sentence. After considering a number of factors, including Ming’s guilty plea, Lo decided to sentence Ming to two years in jail.
