Deep-Fried Delights: Hong Kong’s first ‘churro house’ opens in Tsim Sha Tsui

Is there anything more heavenly than fried dough? Whether you prefer donuts, zha leung, or churros, fried dough is almost always a winner.

With that in mind, we’re (tentatively) excited about Joō de Rolls, Hong Kong’s very first “churro house”, which will serve sweet and savoury “Japanese-style” versions of the popular pastry.

Joō de Rolls takes traditional churros and snazzes ‘em up with fresh fruit, cream, and ice cream. It sounds like a winning combo; if we’ve learned anything from the waffle craze and fro-yo fad of recent years, it’s that Hongkongers love to go OTT on toppings.

“Tiramisu Churros” from the signature desserts menu

The signature desserts, which range from HKD78 to HKD98, include strawberry, lemon curd, tiramisu, or matcha-flavoured churros.

“Churros Tapas”, the perfect donut/beer flight hybrid we never knew we needed

Indecisive and/or greedy diners can avoid making any hard choices by ordering the Churros Tapas (HKD108), which includes four mini-churros, in the flavours strawberry, salted caramel, matcha, and tiramisu.

If you’re all about that OG, fear not: you can also order a “regular” flavoured (a.k.a. sugar) churro with just a scoop of ice cream on the side (HKD78).

“All-Day Breakfast”, a.k.a. ideal stoner food

On the savoury side of things, there’s the All-Day Breakfast (HKD98), which consists of salad, bacon, a sausage, scrambled eggs, tomatoes, and churros, and the Churros Dog (HKD78), which is exactly what it sounds like: a frankfurter sandwiched by a churro. We have to admit, Joō de Rolls has lost us a bit with these ones.

The “Churros Dog”. Seriously though, who came up with this and how bad were their munchies?

To accompany the sugar-laden desserts, the churro house offers a “Detox Water” menu (HK68 a glass), which seems like an odd choice given that the restaurant concept literally revolves around insanely elaborate versions of fried dough. But then again, people contain multitudes, so who are we to judge?
