Soi Chitlom was closed for some time on Saturday morning after a power pole fell and hit Natchapat Somjet, 25, killing her immediately while she was stopped at a traffic light on her motorbike on her way to her job at a nearby bakery at about 10am.
Authorities spent four hours clearing the road. A falling tree had caused several power poles to fall with it. The poles damaged three vehicles and injured at least two other motorcycle drivers who were rushed to a nearby hospital, reported Thai News Bureau. Those victims have not been identified by name.
The Metropolitan Electricity Authority gave THB10,000 to Natchapat’s family.
Police have opened an investigation into the incident, which happened in front of the Alma Link building.
They are looking into whether the owner of Alma Link was responsible for the 20-year-old tree and if it was known to be in poor health to ascertain if anyone will be charged for the accident, death, and injuries.
Building manager Pongsak Ruangpatikorn apologized for the accident and expressed willingness to help the victims, reported Bangkok Post.
Pornchai Chalordej, Lumpini Police Superintendent, said no charges have yet been made.
Since the accident, arborist Decha Boonkham was called in and announced that the tree fell because it was weak from not being cared for.
