The woman in Pattaya who had the nerve to ask for a THB5,000 ransom for an iPhone last week says she was humiliated by how the story turned out.

Last week Saifon Moonchan, 45, found an iPhone 7 Plus at a local 7-Eleven, and in an attempt to make a little cash, she used the phone to call the owner’s sister and asked for a ransom for the iPhone’s safe return.

When the owner offered her THB1,000 for taking care of her phone, Saifon was not pleased. In fact, she so strongly felt that she was within her rights to demand a higher ransom for the phone that she called the police herself to help finish their transaction.

“I didn’t steal it. I found it. I can ask for a ransom that pleases me,” Saifon said.

At the end, Saifon was arrested for theft and had to pay THB50,000 bail. The case is being sent to prosecutors.

Saifon refused to speak with reporters and only said she was “humiliated,” Sanook reported.

A nighttime theft is punished by a five-year jail term and/or a fine of THB10,000 maximum.
