Transport agency greenlights proposal to raise taxi fares in Bangkok

The Department of Land Transport on Wednesday approved a draft proposal that would allow the fares for roughly 80,000 taxis in Bangkok to increase.

While the fares for ordinary taxis (1,600-1,800cc engines) would still start at THB35 (US$1) for the first kilometer, larger taxis (over 2,000cc engines) would start at THB40, according to Wirat Pimpanit, adviser to the Transport Ministry.

All taxis would also see fare hikes for subsequent kilometres traveled. The rate for the 2nd-10th km would be raised from THB 5.5/km to THB 6.5/km while subsequent kilometre increment rates would be raised by THB 0.5 or THB 1.

The hike comes amid rising costs for staple goods in the country including gas and instant noodles, as well as an increase in the minimum wage

Taxi drivers have been clamoring for an increase in fares due to rising fuel costs. The last time taxi fares were raised was 8 years ago.

The proposal to adjust the fares was jointly made by the Thai Public Taxi Association, Suvarnabhumi Taxi Coordination Association, Public Taxi Drivers Association, and the Electric Vehicle Taxi Association.

The next step is for the proposal to be presented to Transport Minister Saksayam Chidchob for approval. If it’s given the green light by Saksayam, it would be announced in the ministerial regulations.
