After running 2,000 kilometers across Thailand to raise money, rock star Toon Bodyslam has handed a check for a THB1.37 billion donation to 11 public hospitals yesterday afternoon in a ceremony at Bangkok’s Rot Fai Park.

Late last year, Athiwara “Toon” Khongmalai, the lead singer of Bodyslam, ran from the southernmost to the northernmost points of Thailand. The 38-year-old raised nearly double of his initial goal of THB700 million from donations, the sale of his merchandise, and auctions of his sneakers.

The donation was received by Maj. Gen. Nimit Samotharn, director of Phramongkutklao Hospital, on behalf of the 11 hospitals in need of medical equipment, according to Thai News Bureau.

Dubbed in local media as a “person of the year” and “national hero,” the rock star received warm welcomes from locals across the country, as they waited at his stopping points to greet the singer and hand him cash donations.

Toon’s marathon was also joined by other Thai celebrities along the way, including Muay Thai star Buakaw Banchamek.
