A ring of thieves that has plagued vendors at Chiang Mai’s night bazaar for years are now in custody, police said yesterday.

Suspected ringleader Arnon Saelu was taken into custody over the weekend aboard a train when it stopped just south of Chiang Mai in Lampang province, railway police commander Maj. Gen. Aumnard Triphot said Sunday.

Aumnard said the 26-year-old suspect was in custody with three other Thai and Chinese nationals who stole millions of baht worth of goods in five years from the tourist market’s stalls. They would usually escape the scene with the loot in a truck, he added, saying that some members were still on the run.

Arnon was charged with theft by the provincial police.
