Thai teens who feel otherwise are prompting warnings that downing Rohypnol – a sedative that puts the roofie in “slipping a roofie,” comes with significant health risks.
Across hundreds of videos hashtagged #BlueTongueTeens, youth with glazed eyes mug for the camera and show off their blue-stained tongues.
Some of the clips have been viewed more than 3.5 million times, and a number of them also promote the sale of the pill, whose popularity as a get-dumb high has surfaced across other social media platforms.
The drug can cause drowsiness and diminished memory function. Rohypnol is classified as a Class 2 psychotropic substance under the Psychotropic Substances Act. Selling it illegally risks 20 years in jail and a fine of up to THB2 million. Unsanctioned use can see up to three years in prison and a fine of THB60,000.
