Summer Soaker: Weekend thunderstorms to drench Bangkok

Heavy rain and thunderstorms will hit most parts of Bangkok this weekend, but don’t expect relief from the heat.

The current hot and heavy weather is forecast to run highs up to 40C through Friday with scattered showers expected to cover most of the metro area by Saturday, so time to dust off those umbrellas if venturing outside. Storms are expected to taper off by the middle of next week.

Southern Thailand will be hit harder, according to state meteorologists, with heavy rain expected Saturday to Monday.

So far early storms have caused some damage in the north and northeast, with farmland and residential areas most affected.

In Chantaburi province, a number of houses and stores were struck by falling trees, causing several hundred thousand baht in damages. The storms there also uprooted fruit-bearing trees destroying valuable durian and longan fruit.

Aid and reconstruction assistance to have gone to those worst hit in 11 affected provinces.

Meteorologists don’t believe Thailand will be affected by tropical storm Vongfong, which is currently over the Philippines.
