The social network is mourning the death of “Piggy Bank” today as users offer condolences and support to Dr. Nantarika Chansue, the chief surgeon of Chulalongkorn University’s veterinary team, who cared for the turtle until the time of her unfortunate death.

The 25-year-old sea turtle, who swallowed 915 coins that people threw into her pool for good luck over the years, died tragically yesterday after slipping into a coma and undergoing a second surgery over the weekend.

Piggy Bank, or Ormsin in Thai, lived in an abandoned pond in Chonburi. Over the years, people made trips to visit her and threw coins into her pond for blessings, resulting in the turtle growing sick from eating the coins, which she must have mistaken for food.

The turtle underwent surgery late last month, when doctors moved the five kilograms of coins from her stomach in a six-hour-long operation. After that, Piggy Bank became world-famous but her health did not improve as doctors hoped

“Ormsin has left us. Everybody tried their best, but we could not save her life. In the past month, we [Ormsin and I] befriended. I watched her struggle to swim, and then she swam cheerfully and started eating. Then bad luck came,” Dr. Nantarika wrote on Facebook.

“Ormsin died peacefully. Rest in peace,” she wrote.

The social network mourned the death of Piggy Bank and offered their condolences to Dr. Nantarika, thanking her for her efforts to save the turtle’s life.

“I offer my condolence. You have my support. At least before Piggy Bank left, a great thing happened to her for the last time. She did not have to bear the pain. She could swim; she could eat her favorite food. She was in the arms of a person who cared for her,” Worawit Kamlerttong wrote.

“You did your best, doctor. Thank you. I think Piggy Bank was happy to not have coins in her stomach, although that didn’t last a long time,” Krekrit Kraipiboon wrote.

“I’d like to offer my support to you. Thank you for being an example of sacrifice,” Yoorachat Chommuang wrote.
