Public outrage over a million-dollar sign do-over at Bangkok’s new passenger rail hub has led not only to a probe of the spending, but also given Thai memesmiths something to sink their fingers into.

Renaming the Bang Sue Grand Station to the indisputably grander new name of Krung Thep Apiwat Grand Station isn’t just a mouthful, it’s proven hard to swallow for taxpayers footing the THB33.2 million (US$1 million) bill to rebuild the station’s big-ass sign.

That fired up the imaginations of net lurkers, who have been busy changing the station’s name to their liking – this time for free.

Just in! Apparently all your memes made a difference: State railway puts 33M baht sign do-over on hold, for now

Dr. Borisut diagnosed the question on everyone’s mind.

Xavikota missed the job specs but captured the national mood.

“What Do You Mean Grand Station” predicts the reaction of future tourists trying to make sense of “Krung Thep Apiwat Grand Station.”

With “33 Million-Baht Sign,” IamATaxpayer definitely takes a literal approach. (And, username checks out.). We choose to believe “bath” was a self-aware wink at the chronic misspelling of the national currency.

A political group seized on the opportunity to plug their progressive party.

Many of the others were puerile dick or vagina jokes. If you can do better, let us know.
