While the country marks its first day of the so-called Phuket Sandbox model allowing entries of international travelers, despite some confusion and some clunky process, Thailand on Thursday reported a new record-high of daily coronavirus infections and deaths.

Thailand this morning confirmed 5,533 COVID-19 infections and 57 fatalities, the highest daily number since the pandemic began in January 2020.

The crisis hit a new peak despite the 30-day restrictions imposed on Bangkok and nine other provinces including bans on dining-in, limited travels and shutdown of workers’ camps.

Today also marks the first day the Thai island of Phuket, under the Phuket Sandbox scheme, welcomes tourist arrivals.

Thailand has so far administered over 9 million doses of COVID vaccines – only 6.8% of the nation’s population. The country’s Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha, to many doubts, vowed that he will reopen Thailand by mid-October after vaccinating at least 50 million people.
