Today is the calm before a stormy weekend Bangkok officials insist they’ve battened down the hatches to prepare for.

Friday’s showers will lead into weekend pounders with heavy rainfall expected across the greater metropolitan area. The drainage department said today it’s braced its drainage, pump and dredging infrastructure for the onslaught with an eye on keeping 14 flood-prone areas above water. Army and police units have been told to stand by to aid with any issues that arise.

Highs will hit 33C with lows falling to 27C this weekend then dropping slightly next week as the rain continues to thunder down.

Elsewhere, monsoon rains will cut through the north and northeast, while a southwesterly will blow over the upper Andaman Sea. Heavy rain and thunderstorms will continue in the northeast, while the east and south will be relatively dry. Flash flood warnings have been issued in the northern and northeastern provinces of Chiang Mai, Mae Hong Son, Tak, Loei, Nong Khai, Udon Thani, Chanthaburi and Trat.

Small craft are advised that waves in the Andaman Sea will reach two meters.
