Bangkok knifepoint hostage drama: Police chief distracted drugged man to allow perfect taser shot

More details have emerged from the hostage situation in the Rama III area of Bangkok yesterday that ended with a man who was holding his wife at knifepoint being tasered and arrested.

After six hours of negotiating with the drunk and drug-addled man Sakdawut Ngarm-siri, police hatched a plan on how to end the stand-off at around 9:20am on April 5, The Daily News reported. The chief of police of Wat Prayakrai Police Station acted as a decoy, speaking softly to Sakdawut and trying to calm him down, while another policeman waited behind him with a hidden taser. At the exact right moment, as Sakdwut was looking away, the policeman shot the taser, shocking him and allowing his wife to escape and police to detain the suspect. Dramatic video of the taser shot is below.

Mayhem erupted at that point as the crowd that had formed to watch the ordeal tried to attack Sakdawut in an angry mob, but police successfully removed him from the area to Wat Prayakrai Police Station. Video of police rushing the suspect out of the area is here:

The incident began earlier in the night, when Sakdawut was arrested for public intoxication as he was caught by police trying to enter his own apartment through the window, according to Sanook. When he was bailed from jail by his wife, he blamed her for getting arrested and an argument ensued that ended with Sakdwut pulling a knife on her and taking her hostage at the mouth of their apartment soi.

After the hostage situation, his wife was taken to the hospital to check for injuries.

Dramatic photos of the incident can be found at The Daily News and the Associated Press.
