Look Up! Moon to dance around three planets tonight and tomorrow

Look up from your screens and turkey dinners tonight toward the heavens just after sunset for the rare sight of a thin crescent moon chasing not one but three planets: Venus, Jupiter and Saturn.

The three planets and moon will be in conjunction and visible to the naked eye if looking close to the horizon from anywhere in Southeast Asia.

Tonight, Venus and Jupiter will be separated by nearly 5 degrees and accompanied by a thin, waxing crescent moon.

It can be viewed from anywhere with an unobstructed view of the horizon, but the less light pollution there is, the better. The phenomenon will be most visible 30 to 45 minutes after sunset and remain visible for an hour or two. Sunset today is 5:48pm in Bangkok, 5:38pm in Hong Kong, 6:54pm in Singapore, 7pm KL, 5:54pm in Jakarta, all local times.

If there are no clouds, one may be able to see what’s called earthshine, when light reflected from the earth creates a dull glow on the dark part of the moon.

Tomorrow, the crescent moon will slide closer to Saturn, appearing just 1.5 degrees below it.

Don’t worry. If you miss this special union, it will happen again on Nov. 29, 2043.
