Liberians arrested in Nana area for scam involving counterfeit US dollars

Two Liberian men were arrested by Immigration officials yesterday in Nana area apartment for possessing fake dollar bills worth USD5000.

Liberian men David Neal, 40, and Mathas Davies, 53, were arrested on Sukhumvit Soi 4 in a room they had been renting for eight months, according to Immigration police chief Nathathorn Prousoontorn. Both had overstayed tourist visas for years, according to the Bangkok Post.

The pair allegedly confessed that they had been selling a liquid solution to customers that they said could remove black markings from US dollars. They claimed they had gotten from the bills from a charity related to the United Nations. With the black markings removed, the thinking was that the bills could be put back into circulation.

Many of their customers bought the chemical solution to remove the markings from dollar bills for prices between THB100,000 to THB500,000 according to Pol. Lt. Gen. Nathathorn.

In actuality, the bills bearing black marks did not come from a charity, they were fakes.

The police are searching for the source of the counterfeit dollars and for possible Thai accomplices.
