The assets of a police chief sent to prison for murdering and torturing a suspect in his custody will be confiscated, after they were estimated to be worth an astounding THB1.3 billion (US$34 million).
Former Nakhon Sawan police chief Thitisan Uttanaphon, known in the media as “Joe Ferrari” for his unusual wealth, will also be charged with new crimes while his numerous homes and luxury supercars are seized by the National Anti-Corruption Commission.
The commission said it would file its report and evidence with the attorney general to lodge criminal charges of corruption and misconduct.
Thitisan gained notoriety in August 2021 after a leaked video showed him and his subordinates suffocating 24-year-old Jirapong Thanapat with a plastic bag inside the station.
Thitisan said he was pressing a drug suspect to give up information to protect the public. The whistleblower who leaked the video said through a lawyer that Thitisan was actually snuffing out a rival.
His collection of sports cars drew attention to his abnormally large fortune, prompting investigators to launch an inquiry into how he obtained over a billion baht worth of vehicles and properties.
The former cop said the cars were obtained as “rewards” for his sting operations.
He and five other subordinates were given life sentences in June.
