Japanese expat accuses Thai police of kidnapping him for THB 3-million ransom

A Japanese expat based in Bangkok has filed a complaint against three police officers who he says kidnapped him and his wife and demanded a THB3-million ransom, according to a report published yesterday.

Masato Kikuchi, 36, owner of an entertainment complex in Silom area, said the officers went to his luxurious Empire Tower condominium on Sathorn Road on Sept 5 and accused him and his Thai wife of being part of a drug syndicate.

They allegedly threatened the couple with guns and took them to a safe house, and told Kikuchi to pay THB3 million if he didn’t want to be arrested.

The location of the safe house was not identified.

Kikuchi, overwhelmed with fear, said he only had THB1 million in cash. The men accepted it and released the couple.

Yan Nawa police identified the three officers as Pol.Lt.Col. Pongthawat Kongsuea from Office of Police Strategy, Pol. Lt. Kritpakorn Niamsorn from Crime Suppression Division and Pol.Sen.Sgt.Maj. Weerasak Paosu from Phra Khanong police station.

Police have requested warrants from Bangkok South Criminal Court to arrest the trio under the charges of threatening someone with a gun, accepting bribes, and wrongly refraining to perform official duties, Khaosod reported.
