In a high profile road accident case, wealthy businessman Jenphop Weeraporn was sentenced to two years and six months in prison this morning for slamming his Mercedes into another car at high speed and killing two grad students inside.
On March 13, 2016, Jenphop, owner of a luxury car dealership, was driving at an estimated speed of over 250 kph when he crashed his Mercedes into another vehicle, killing two people, Kritsana Thaworn, 32, and Thanthapat Horsaeng, 34, in Ayutthaya province.
The court found him guilty of reckless driving and handed down a sentence of five-years in jail. The sentence was halved due to his confession.
A charge of DUI that was pending against him for the same incident was dismissed due to lack of evidence from the unclear police investigation, reported Khaosod English.
As Jenphop sat in the cell room after the verdict was heard, his lawyer said he would file an appeal and apply for bail.
This case got widespread attention and often drew comparisons to similar cases such as that of Red Bull heir Vorayuth “Boss” Yoovidhya, hi-so crash-and-text daughter Orachorn “Praewa” Thephasadin na Ayudhya, and actress Anna Reese; all privileged elite Thais that killed people with their cars and evaded, ignored, or disregarded charges for their actions.
