International Lantern Festival opens in Chiang Mai

Littering the city of Chiang Mai this week are thirty lantern models of the world’s most famous attractions. The selected models are symbols from all parts of the world including the Sydney Opera House, London’s Big Ben and Japan’s Torii gate.

The International Lantern Festival will be held from 21-29 August 2013 for the first time to celebrate Queen Sirikit’s 81st birthday and promote tourism.

The lanterns are placed all around the city, so visitors are advised to take a tuk-tuk to enjoy the exhibition. Chiang Mai will also host several cultural shows on stage at Thapae gate, starting at 18:00 every day during the festive period, the Daily News reported.
