Over 300 Buddhist hermits from all over the world gathered yesterday to exchange their experience in practicing dhamma in the Isaan province of Maha Sarakham.

The “Hermit Con” was held for the second time in the province’s Krutham Hermit House. Practitioners from Thailand, China, Taiwan, Vietnam, Hong Kong and those from other continents came to the ceremony.

The hermits cited prayers for their teachers, appeased deities, and recited incantations to make objects sacred. They also held a rite to ward off bad luck and exhibited amulets and charms from different regions.

Mhee Phayakdam, a hermit from Thailand’s Suphanburi province, told Thai News Agency that the first Hermit Con was held in his province, and this year’s conference was organized through the hermits’ Facebook community.
Hermits who attended the conference will have a chance to get to know and share the spiritual experience, which can vary depending on the society that they live in. Mhee said that a person who wants to live as a hermit must uphold Buddhism’s Five Precepts to maintain the purity of the body, words, and mind. They must meditate daily, say prayers, and dedicate themselves to committing good deeds.
