Government takes measures to increase road safety during Songkran holidays

The Ministry of Transport will increase road safety measures over the upcoming Songkran holidays — always some of the deadliest days of the year in a country already known for its road fatalities — to  try to ensure safety for people celebrating during Songkran.

Transport Minister Arkhom Termpittayapaisith has instructed related agencies to be ready to accommodate holidaymakers during the upcoming Thai New Year, reported NNT.

The opening of a special lane on highways, increasing bus services, and driver fitness examinations are among measures expected to be carried out to relieve traffic congestions and increase road safety over the five-day holiday period.

In advance of the holiday, the Transport Co. is providing a free van checkup service for all public vans at Mo Chit Station from March 26-28 from 10am-4pm.

It is expected that up to 200,000 people a day will leave Bangkok during the holidays especially on the first two days of the festival. The number of trips will increase from 6,600 to 8,000 per day to meet the high demand.
