While Bangkok continues to deal with health-threatening air pollution, visitors to Northern Thailand are rejoicing at experiencing the tiniest sliver of “winter.”

This morning, visitors could be spotted gleefully taking photos at the kingdom’s highest peak, Doi Inthanon — located in Chiang Mai province’s Chom Thong district — as temperatures dropped to a frosty -2 degrees celsius.

Doi Inthanon National Park announced on their Facebook page that the temperature at Kiew Mae Pan, the peak of the peak (see what we did there), had reached the below-freezing temperatures.

Pictures from the mountain typically flood social media every year as flocks of tourists and locals alike flock up the mountain to snap pics and take in the frosty ambiance.

Though the scene is unlikely to phase anyone’s who’s ever experienced Tokyo’s or Boston’s brutal chill, frost-glazed grass and icy flowers are a far-from-usual sight in famously sunny Thailand.

When Doi Inthanon first saw its temps dropping this “winter” back in November, tourists reacted in much the same manner.

Fun and games aside, Doi Inthanon officials recommend visitors be extra careful when making their way up the icy mountain.

In case you wondering, the air quality in Chiang Mai right now is graded “moderate,” with a score of 59 from the global Air Quality Index — a walk in the park compared to Bangkok’s current “unhealthy” AQI score of 151.
