An allegedly inebriated Thai man plowed his car into a furniture store in the wee hours of this morning, setting it ablaze and causing over THB80 million (about US$2.6 million) in damages. Yikes.

At 3am today, Police in Songkhla province’s Kho Hong district received a report regarding a fire at a large furniture store that began when a grey Toyota Corolla driven by 26-year-old Pereuhat Sawjiw slammed into it and burst into flames.

It took officials almost three hours to extinguish the fire, by which time the entire store including all of its products and the car that rammed into it has been completely destroyed, reported Workpoint.

The heat allegedly also caused damage to the wall of a steel company located next door.

Officials stationed at a military security checkpoint nearby had to pull the injured Pereuhat out of the wreckage before transporting him to Had Yai hospital.

Fortunately, there were no other as the store was empty due to the late hour.

Witnesses told officials that Pereuhat was driving at an extremely high speed before the collision, according to Thairath. Pereuhat was reportedly still so drunk as to be incomprehensible when pulled from his car.

Meanwhile, 50-year-old store owner Asharee Wandapdoollhor estimated total damages to be worth more than THB80 million (about US$2.6 million), that’s particularly problematic given that neither the store nor the car were insured.

Pereuhat currently faces two charges for driving negligently causing property damage and, of course, drunk driving. He will reportedly be summoned for further interrogations by police after he is discharged from the hospital.
